Kulim Jamboree Trail ride – Sunday April 26, 2009
Initially this weekend was reserved for Penang round island trip but was cancelled. However, a day earlier on Saturday Steven, CK and Wei Keat joined the MKH group for round island trip. We will attempt this some other days.
8 of us joined this Sunday ride. Albert, KT Tan (aka Teoh), Tua Jia, Ah Hock (Venzo bike), Wei Keat, Cheah Wei, Chin Hooi and KY started the ride at about 7:15am.
2 days before we decided to go for the Kulim jamboree trail by putting our GPS to use. This is the first time we are guided by the GPS. The GPS was mounted on Wei Keat’s bike and it gave a precise navigation by following the preloaded Jamboree trail. However, some parts of the trail were still well marked by the Jamboree signs thus provided further confirmation we were on the right track. There were a few occasions that we were navigated back to the right track especially if we took the wrong junction or we really go off-track (for exploration) since there are too many trails in the Jamboree area. We can get loss easily.
The trails were generally more slippery compare to previous attempt during Jamboree day due to the past weeks of heavy rain. We had to go slow beside we spend quite some time waiting for Cheah Wei who have not been riding for quite sometime. At a certain point, he was lost and luckily phone reception was available and Wei Keat instructed him back to the right track.
We completed phase 1 (before road-crossing) close to 2 hours making it unsuitable for weekdays ride but we went off-track too in this phase. We still think that it’s unsafe to attempt this Phase 1 trail after work-hours although we have a GPS.
Phase 2 (after road-crossing) was where there were more steep hills and 2 river crossings. We have to slow down quite considerably. The Raja Bukit uphill were muddy and looks slippery when we arrived at the bottom of the ascend. At first we want to by-pass it by going another trail but it seems the trails lead further and further and finally we decided to ‘patah-balik’ and conquer the Raja Bukit hill. It was not that slippery as seen and luckily we took this trail or else we will end up no where again.
KY fell on one of the descends because he was going-down too fast and road also was quite slippery but luckily he fell on the bushes and no injury sustained. But his GPS watch strap was broken and fell off from the wrist. Wei Keat helped to look back the watch.Tua Jiak encountered tyre-puncture and we waited a while too.
Everyone removed the shoes at the river crossing. It was cooling and Tua Jiak took some candid photos. Albert and Tua Jiak also refilled their water bottles at the river. Tua Jiak said the water tastes good!! Most of the riders have hydration backpack so its not too back but all finished the water too before the ride ends.
We continue our ride without much event accepts Cheah Wei got loss at a certain point. After he was back with us, Wei Keat who has the GPS became the sweeper. We think that those with GPS should lead especially in an off-road like this Jamboree trail. We totally dependent on the GPS.
After a few more hills and rocky and bumpy descent. We decided not to tackle the Infineon hill, its already hot and quite late and at the housing area we short-cut out to Sg Ular road. When we saw the first ‘warung’ and being hungry we stopped for breakfast/lunch and the time was already 12pm. No 100plus available but we content with Kickapoo. tea-tarik, buns and some even had had Malay rice and Maggi sup.
We reached back at Wei Keat’s house at 1:15pm so it’s a 6 hours for about 51km off-road ride with many stops.

Ride update:Kulim-Selama-Labu Besar- Kulim
Total 11 persons participated in sunday Selama-Labu Besar ride. we started off from 6.40am and completed the ride at 11.00am. A few stops along the ways(including B/F) making the journey very enjoyabale. The pace is just about right with average speed of 28kmh. Everyone were managed to enjoy the ride and managed to reach final destination in about 5 minutes apart. Total distance ~90km. 10km short from our estimation as we did not go into Selama town for breakfast.
Treasure of the day. We all enjoyed the best nescafe tarik and roti canai in Kulim/Sedim.It is just 200meter on the left after the junction where your turn into Sedim from the main road toward Mahang. The thick and a little bit salty nescafe tarik combined with crispy roti canai make it a wonderful breakfast after the long ride. For those who missed the ride, for sure you do not want to miss the food. Drive there and have it yourself.

Ride photos- SP---Jerai
The ride started from 7.40a.m from Tesco SP to Jerai. Total 8 person. One joining from foothill of Jerai. Before we about to start, received a call from Albert saying Teoh and him were robbed by a gang of mat rempit somewhere near Jabatan merdeka. Both Teoh and Albert were cycling all the way from Tambun and try to meet up in SP. It was so unfortunate, they run into those ganster. Anyway, both were safe with some damaged on Albert's bike.
We got the bad news but we decided to go ahead with the plan since we knows both of them were safe. After 45-50min ride, we reached the foothill. Got to know also, Albert n team are on their way to Jerai despite the earlier incident. we waited for 20min and finalize the white car with 4 bikes on top of it parked. After the sharing session on the incident and group photo. Jerai, here we come. We start riding up at 900am and reached the top by 1045. As usual, a round of photos to celebrate the accomplisment and it is time to decend. we reached the foothill at around 11.15am. after a water refill session, we are heading back. By that time, the tempeature is i guess almost 36c. It is real hot. Everyone is suffering from the heat. With the heat and heart to go home, nothing gonna to stop us now. The last person arrived Tesco at around 12.15pm. Some of us took a break and lunch at Kayu nasi kandar and leaving SP at 1.00pm. It was a good trip overall.
Jerai, we will be back.....

Kulim- Baling Ride
Mar 29th Kulim-Baling ride.
9 person were joining the ride and completed the 120km route safely with fun and sweat. We started of abit late as Mr. Lau was caught in early traffic over the Pg.Bridge ( it is weird). Anyway, we departed around 6.45am from President's house in KHTP. Riding toward Sg kod before making a left turn toward desa aman. From there, we were crusing slightly uphill before decent toward the desa aman roundabout. Exit toward the main road and it is all the way toward Baling. Cruising speed is up to 34-35kmh(guideline is max 33kmh) with big drive from our skipper We arrived Baling town at around 9.15am. we have wantan mee and Jawa mee at local kopitiam with countless 100+ and on our way back at 10.00am. When we about to leave, we met up with blogger; Balingbikers. Had a few chat.(good to meet him). Sun is out and getting hot. we are on our way back. Our skipper can't wait anyone, we started to push and after few traffic lights, he and his few buddies started to put a big gap behind the rest. Apprcoahing the junction toward Grik and Kulim, there is a big climb ahead. That is thrilling. We managed to ride through with whatever speed anyway.
TH and gang disappearing in front but they managed to make a stop and wait for the rest. From there, the speed is up with 34/35 even it is uphill. we made another stop for 100+. alot of 100+. of course a very nice lady owner to chat as well. Then, we headed for last 20km back. That's was the most killing part from desa aman toward sg kob. It is almost uphill all the way. Everyone started to feel the heat and muscle started not to listen to mind. It is a never ending ride but still we managed to make it. Everyone arrived safely at about 1.00pm.
It was fun and sweat with of course some minor hiccup along the journey. At the end, we managed to accomplish a milestone where we managed to have our 1st 120km ride. i beleive it will be more and more of this ride ahead.
2 setback fot the trip. We didn't manage to take any picture(camera man Yeap is not around). Major one is we have Mr Edmundo pull out due to Cheng Beng(he convinced his father to Cheng Beng to skip the trip)
